My husband be@t me for refusing to live with my mother-in-law. Then he calmly went to bed. The next morning, he handed me a luxury makeup kit and said, “My mother’s coming for lunch. Cover that up and smile.”

He did not know the card was in there.

I am almost certain of that. Because if he had known, he would have taken it out.

He is careless. She is not. The receipt was the shop’s. The card was the only thing in that box she put there herself.

What I did at twenty to nine.

I replied to Margit.

***2. Moving to today. Lunch at 1. Georgiana arriving.***

And Margit rang me back on the black phone about four minutes later, and we did it in whispers with the bath running.

We had a plan for Friday. Friday was when Dorian flew to Boston for his standing meeting. Friday was when the transfer would have been clean and the order filed and a bag already in the boot of a car he did not know I had.

None of that was ready on the Sunday. And Margit, who has done this for nineteen years, said the thing that I have thought about more than anything else since.

“Then we don’t do Friday’s plan. We do Sunday’s. You’re not leaving him. You’re getting him out.”

Hollis Brandt filed at ten. A judge on the emergency rota signed at a quarter to twelve.
