My husband be@t me for refusing to live with my mother-in-law. Then he calmly went to bed. The next morning, he handed me a luxury makeup kit and said, “My mother’s coming for lunch. Cover that up and smile.”

Cressida.

She had given a statement in the September about 2016. The judge ruled parts of it admissible. And I am told that when Dorian saw her name he did not say anything for a long time.

He got a suspended sentence, a long order, and a programme he is required to complete. I have been told that is a normal outcome and I believe it, and I have also stopped needing it to be more than it was.

And Margit, afterwards, who I asked the question I could not ask anybody else.

Was it normal. The kit. The card. Buying it before.

And she did not say it was unusual. She said she had seen something like it before — not a makeup kit, other things — about a dozen times in nineteen years.

“There’s usually somebody who helps it look normal,” she said. “Somebody who makes the morning work. Very often they’re family. Very often they’ve done it before, for somebody else, or had it done for them.”

And I asked whether Georgiana had been hurt herself, once. Whether that was why.

And Margit said: “Maybe. It would explain her. It wouldn’t excuse the Thursday.”

And then she said the sentence I wrote on a Post-it and stuck inside my wardrobe door.
