My fiancé’s mother paid me to disappear from their lives — I took the money, but I had a different plan.

I stood up.

“I think I should go.”

She smiled.

“Of course, dear.”

That night, Ryan told me his mother was simply struggling to adjust.

I wanted to believe him.

I really did.

But Patricia wasn’t merely struggling to accept me. She was actively trying to make our wedding impossible.

She called our venue pretending Ryan had asked her to change the date. She told relatives that I was pressuring him to buy a house I couldn’t afford. She even contacted my mother and suggested that our engagement was moving too quickly.

My mother listened patiently.

Then she asked Patricia one question.

“If your son is unhappy, why doesn’t he say so himself?”

Patricia ended the call.

The wedding was scheduled for October, four months away.

By then, Ryan and I had agreed on a small ceremony, a modest reception, and a honeymoon we could afford without taking on debt.
