My fiancé’s mother paid me to disappear from their lives — I took the money, but I had a different plan.

Patricia attended, too.

She didn’t make a speech or try to take over the day.

When Ryan and I exchanged vows, he held both my hands and looked directly into my eyes.

“I choose you,” he said. “Not because anyone told me to. Not because I’m afraid of losing someone else. I choose you because I want to build a life with you, and because I understand now that love without trust isn’t enough.”

I cried.

So did he.

And when I looked across the room, I saw Elaine wiping her eyes while Patricia sat quietly beside her.

Two women who had once been forced to compete for a place in Ryan’s life were finally allowed to exist in the same room without anyone demanding that he choose between them.

That was the victory I had wanted all along.

Not the money.

Not revenge.

Not even an apology.

The freedom to love someone without having to fight their family for permission.
