She didn’t comfort him.
She simply sat down.
The trustee announced the decision.
Richard Carter and Monica Carter would be removed as beneficiaries under the terms of the trust.
Their future inheritance would be redistributed according to the amended provisions.
The building used by my father’s company would remain under the trust.
His right to operate the business there would be reviewed separately.
The unauthorized transfers would be pursued for recovery.
And Grandma would have complete control over her remaining assets.
My father stared at the table.
Aunt Monica cried quietly.
Then my father asked the question that changed the entire room.
“Mom, are you cutting us out forever?”
Grandma looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
He looked up.
She continued.
“That depends on what you do when you no longer expect money from me.”
Nobody spoke.
“Because if the only reason you come back is because you want your inheritance, then you haven’t changed.”
Dad nodded slowly.
“And if I change?”
Grandma’s voice softened.
“Then we’ll see.”
The hearing ended.
Outside, the sky was gray.
Dad approached Grandma near the courthouse steps.
I stayed several feet away.
He looked older than he had at the airport.
