My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

“That was a diplomatic assessment. I could have mentioned the smell.”

I laughed so suddenly that I nearly spilled the coffee.

She looked pleased with herself.

I set a mug in front of her and glanced at the notebook.

“What are we investigating first?”

“Everything.”

“Excellent. I love a manageable project.”

She turned the notebook toward me.

There were columns for dates, transactions, names, and missing documents. Sarah had already written down the name of the real estate company, the date of the property transfer, and the number of the attorney she intended to contact.

I raised my eyebrows.

“You did all this before breakfast?”

“I haven’t been sitting around waiting for someone to rescue me, Mark.”

The words were sharp, but her expression softened immediately.

“I’m sorry. That came out badly.”

“No, it didn’t. And for the record, I don’t think you need rescuing. I think you need coffee, a lawyer, and possibly a better daughter.”
