My Ex’s Mother Knocked at My Door at 11 P.M. and Whispered, “I Have Nowhere Else to Go.” By Morning, My Entire Life Had Changed.

“Unless you’ve secretly brought an entire legal team in those suitcases, yes. We.”

“Mark, I can’t ask you to get involved in this.”

“You didn’t ask. You knocked.”

“And you have your own life.”

“Sarah, my life currently consists of work, frozen pizza, and trying to remember whether I own matching socks. Believe me, there’s room for a little paperwork.”

She shook her head, but this time she was smiling.

It lasted only a second.

Then she whispered, “I don’t know how I’m going to get through this.”

I leaned forward.

“One day at a time.”

“And if one day isn’t enough?”

“Then we handle the next one together.”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Finally, she nodded.

I showed her the spare bedroom, found an extra blanket, and told her to take whatever time she needed.

At the door, she stopped.

“Mark?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”
