She looked down at our joined hands.
“But I also told her that if she genuinely wanted to change, I wouldn’t close the door forever.”
I squeezed her fingers.
“That’s fair.”
Sarah leaned against me.
“Mark, there’s something else.”
I waited.
“Jenna told me why she originally came up with the idea of selling the house.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Because Daniel had convinced her that my husband had hidden a fortune from her.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Daniel told her Robert had left assets that belonged to her, and that I was deliberately keeping them from her. He showed her documents he claimed proved it.”
“But the trust was intended to protect you.”
“Yes. And he knew that.”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“He convinced my daughter that stealing from me was the same as taking back what she deserved.”
I sat silently, struggling to understand the cruelty of it.
