Then Jenna called.
Her voice was different.
Quiet.
Frightened.
“Mom, I need to see you.”
Sarah hesitated.
“Why?”
“Please. I can’t explain this over the phone.”
Sarah looked at me.
I nodded, leaving the decision to her.
After a moment, she agreed to meet Jenna at a public café the following afternoon.
I offered to accompany her, but she shook her head.
“I need to do this myself.”
I understood.
When she returned, she looked as though she had aged ten years in two hours.
I made tea and sat beside her.
“What happened?”
She took a long breath.
“Daniel has disappeared.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean, disappeared?”
“His company has collapsed. The authorities are investigating the financial records, and he left town. Jenna says she hasn’t heard from him since Tuesday.”
“Did she know what he was doing?”
Sarah stared at her tea.
“She admitted that she knew he had used some of my documents. She said he convinced her it was temporary. He promised that once the company recovered, he would restore everything.”
