She nodded.
The legal process was slow and exhausting. The disputed transfer was challenged, financial records were examined, and the authorities began investigating the suspected misuse of Sarah’s identity and assets.
Nothing was resolved overnight.
But for the first time since that rainy night, Sarah had a plan.
She found temporary work helping a local bakery manage its orders. She opened a new bank account, secured her personal documents, and began rebuilding her finances.
She also started looking at small rental properties.
One Saturday, I accompanied her to view a modest apartment with a balcony and a view of a row of maple trees.
The place was nothing special.
The kitchen was small. The bathroom needed work. One bedroom had wallpaper that looked as though it had been selected during a particularly unfortunate argument.
Sarah stood in the living room, looking around.
“I think I could be happy here.”
I nodded.
