“You aren’t.”
He reached for my hand.
I let him hold it for a moment.
Then I gently pulled away.
“Talk to Delaney first.”
He respected my decision.
Two days later, Caleb met Delaney at the café where she had accused me of sleeping with him.
He told her their relationship was over.
She cried. She argued. She reminded him of their plans.
He listened, apologized for the pain their breakup caused, and refused to reconsider.
When she asked whether he was leaving her for me, he told her the truth.
He had feelings for me, but he had not been physically involved with me.
He would not lie about what had happened.
Delaney stared at him.
“So all of this was for nothing?”
“No,” he said quietly. “Our relationship has been broken for a long time. This situation didn’t create that.”
She left without saying goodbye.
Caleb came to my house that evening and told me they were finished.
