“Then why are you always around him?”
“Because he’s our neighbor, and because you used to bring me to his house yourself!”
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, I thought she might finally listen.
Instead, she stood.
“You’ve been waiting for your chance, haven’t you?”
“Delaney, please.”
“Eleven years. Eleven years of friendship, and you couldn’t leave one man alone.”
I stood, too.
“I have never touched Caleb. I told him I had feelings for him, and he told me he wouldn’t betray you. That’s all that happened.”
Her face went pale.
“You told him you loved him?”
“I told him I had feelings for him. And I told you the truth because I respect you.”
She stared at me as if I had confessed to a crime.
Then she picked up her handbag.
“You’re going to regret this.”
She walked out.
I remained at the table, shaking.
