My ex-wife and her new husband refused to pay the $7,000+ bill after I spent nearly a week repairing their badly damaged Mercedes.

I stared at her.

“And you believed him?”

“I had no reason not to.”

I almost reminded her of all the reasons she should have questioned him.

But I didn’t.

“What changed?”

She looked at me.

“The insurance company called me.”

I waited.

“They asked where I was when the accident happened.”

“And?”

“I told them I wasn’t there.”

She swallowed.

“Then they asked why the Mercedes had been driven to your shop two days later.”

I leaned back.

“You knew I was repairing it.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t know about the insurance claim.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

There was something different in her expression.

For the first time in years, Laura looked genuinely afraid.

“What happened after that?” I asked.

“They started asking about Brent’s finances.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

She covered her face with both hands.

Then she whispered something I hadn’t expected.

“Because Brent has been lying to me too.”

I sat quietly.

Laura explained that the wealthy life she had bragged about wasn’t what it seemed.

The expensive house had a large mortgage.

The cars were financed.

Several business accounts were behind on payments.

And Brent had borrowed money from people she had never heard of.
