Tom and I had been divorced for eight years by the time our oldest daughter, Emma, got married.
People liked to call our divorce “amicable.” I always thought that word was generous.
We weren’t friends. We didn’t share holidays. We didn’t call each other to catch up or trade news about the girls over coffee. What we had was more like a ceasefire. Over the years, we’d learned how to stand side by side at graduations and birthday dinners without making our daughters pay for whatever bitterness was still smoldering between us.
At least, that’s what I believed.
