I looked at her. “You w-want to go b-back?”
“I want to see the sunrise first.”
So we did.
Stress had always brought it back.
The canyon slowly turned gold beneath us, and Hailey rested her head against my shoulder.
Then she whispered, “Okay. Now we can go.”

Six hours later, I was marching into Dr. Carter’s office with Hailey beside me.
He stood before I even sat down. “I’m sorry I scared you.”
Maybe this isn’t another goodbye.
“You sent a park ranger after my daughter.”
“I couldn’t reach your phone.”
“There was no signal.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me why we’re here.”
I scared you.
He glanced at Hailey. “Because yesterday afternoon I received a call from a research team in Germany.”
Germany was already more than I’d expected to hear.
But there was a lot Dr. Carter still hadn’t told me.
Hailey frowned. “Germany?”
Dr. Carter nodded.
“How did they even know about me?”
I received a call from a research team in Germany.
For half a second, Dr. Carter hesitated. “Your records have been circulating among specialists for some time.”
“Because you sent them?”
“Some of them.”
I caught the wording. “Some?”
