She never told me. She never told anybody. And whatever else was happening in that marriage, that request is the thing that started the clock.
And here is who sent me the 2019 file.
His mother. Isaura.
By courier, to my quarters, on the Thursday, with no note.
Not out of remorse. I want to be extremely clear about that, because I spent a fortnight constructing a version of that woman in my head that does not exist.
She has been keeping a parallel file for eleven years.
I have seen it. All of it, in the June, in a room with a solicitor, across two afternoons.
It is not what people imagine. There is nothing dramatic in it.
It is dates, in a hardback notebook, in handwriting that gets slightly smaller after about 2017. A page of firm names. Photocopies with the corners squared off.
It is the most disciplined document I have ever been shown by a civilian, and I have been shown a great many documents.
Dates. Copies. Names of firms. An envelope that lives in a handbag and goes where she goes, which is why it was in that corridor on that Tuesday and which is why she was standing six paces away from her own husband with it.
