MY DAUGHTER LEFT FOR KOREA 12 YEARS AGO… THEN I FINALLY WENT LOOKING FOR HER.

 THE SECOND KEY

I sat beside my daughter while she told me the story she had been hiding for twelve years.

After their wedding, Kang Jun had taken her to Korea.

At first, everything had been wonderful.

He had a successful business.

They traveled.

They lived in a beautiful apartment.

He treated her like a princess.

Then, slowly, things changed.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just little by little.

He began controlling everything.

Where she went.

Who she spoke to.

What she spent.

Even who she could call.

“He never hit me,” she said.

“But he made me feel like I was disappearing.”

I reached for her hand.

“Then why did you stay?”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because leaving wasn’t as simple as getting on a plane.”

She explained that years earlier, she had discovered something inside Kang Jun’s business.

Something she wasn’t supposed to see.

Financial records.

Secret accounts.

Names of people she had never heard of.

She had confronted him.

He warned her to stay quiet.

After that, she became isolated.

But there was something Kang Jun didn’t know.

Mary Lou had quietly saved copies of the documents.

And every year, she sent me eighty thousand dollars.

Not because she was wealthy.

Because she had found a way to move money from an account Kang Jun believed was inaccessible.

“What were you trying to do?” I asked.

“Build a way out.”

She looked toward an old wooden cabinet.

“I’ve been preparing for years.”

She opened a drawer and pulled out a small metal box.

Inside were photographs, documents, and a tiny brass key.

I stared at it.

“What does that open?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

I picked it up.

Then Mary Lou suddenly whispered,

“There is another one.”

“Another what?”

“Another key.”

We both looked toward the hallway.

A floorboard creaked.

Mary Lou’s face turned white.

Someone was standing outside.

She grabbed my hand.

“Mom…”

“What?”

Her voice barely came out.

“Kang Jun found us.”
