These days, when someone in our family needs help, we try to ask instead of assume.

And when one of us says no, nobody treats it like an insult.

Most Saturdays, my basement is quiet now.

The washer holds my clothes.

The dryer holds my towels.

And beside them, where enormous bags of somebody else’s dirty laundry used to appear every weekend, there is nothing at all.

I like it that way.
