A patrol car pulled into the parking lot.
Then another.
A door slammed.
Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Dr. Stevens looked toward the door.
Then at me.
“Keep Emma behind you.”
I moved immediately.
Emma climbed off the examination table.
I put my arm around her.
The door opened.
Two officers stepped inside.
One was a woman in her forties.
The other was a younger man holding a small notebook.
The woman introduced herself as Detective Harris.
She looked at Emma first.
Then at me.
Then at the evidence bag on the counter.
“Mrs. Patterson?”
“Yes.”
“Is that your mother-in-law’s prescription?”
“Yes.”
“Did your daughter tell you that her grandmother gave her this medication?”
“Yes.”
Detective Harris nodded.
“Has anyone else been giving your daughter medication?”
“I don’t know.”
The words sounded terrible coming out of my mouth.
I should know.
I was her mother.
I should have known.
Detective Harris seemed to understand what I was thinking.
“You did the right thing by bringing her here.”
I looked at Emma.
She was holding onto my sweater.
The detective crouched slightly.
“Emma, you’re not in trouble.”
Emma looked at her.
“Is Grandma mad?”
The detective paused.
“No one is going to punish you for telling the truth.”
