I was almost at the front door when someone touched my arm.
“Ma’am?”
I turned.
It was our waitress.
She looked nervous. “Can I speak to you for a second?”
I glanced toward the entrance.
Megan and Jake were a few steps ahead, talking to my aunt.
“Sure.”
The waitress lowered her voice.
“I thought you should see this.”
She handed me another receipt.
I frowned. It was from the same restaurant.
But the time at the top was almost an hour before our reservation.
Two entrees, two drinks, and one dessert.
About $200.
“What is this?”
She hesitated. “Your sister-in-law asked me to add that table’s check to the family bill.”
“What table?”
“The one she was sitting at before everyone arrived.”
“She was already here?”
“Yes.”
“With whom?”
“A man.”
I looked across the restaurant.
Megan was standing beside Jake, smiling at something my cousin had said.
“So I just paid for her dinner with another man?”
“Yes, she said this should be added to our bill.”
“Without telling me.”
The waitress looked uncomfortable. “Yes.”
I asked, “Why are you showing me?”
She shifted her weight.
“Because when she asked me to combine the checks, I thought she was paying for both.”
