“I need to stop trusting people who call themselves family at work.”
“Probably both.”
I laughed despite myself.
The next morning, however, Graham managed to hurt me in an entirely different way.
We entered the elevator together.
Mrs. Bell and her husband were already inside.
They’d seen Graham and me returning from bowling.
Naturally, Mrs. Bell asked whether we’d had a good time.
Graham nodded.
“Sure. It was fun.”
Nothing else.
No smile at me.
No indication that he’d kissed me two nights earlier.
He started discussing the weather.
The weather.
After everything happening at work, somehow that little moment nearly broke me.
When the elevator opened, I walked away.
He knocked on my door that evening.
“What happened?” he asked.
I let him into my kitchen.
“You kissed me when nobody was watching, Graham. Then you acted like I was just another neighbor.”
He looked genuinely ashamed.
