She was afraid that as Daniel began his own family, the memories and traditions they had shared with their mother would gradually disappear.
Daniel reassured her that getting married did not mean forgetting their mother.
He told her that he wanted her to be part of his future, not excluded from it.
Their conversation did not solve every disagreement immediately, but it allowed them to begin understanding one another.
A few days later, I met his sister for coffee.
I was nervous.
I had no idea whether she would resent me for accepting the ring or blame me for the conflict.
But when she arrived, she looked just as uncomfortable as I felt.
She sat across from me and folded her hands around her cup.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
I looked at her in surprise.
She took a breath.
“I shouldn’t have put Daniel in that position. I was upset, and I reacted as though keeping the ring was the only way to protect my connection to our mother.”
