“I told her the ring had been given to me. I told her that Mom wanted me to use it when I found someone I loved.”
“And she accepted that?”
“No.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She said she couldn’t believe I would give away the last important piece of Mom’s jewelry without considering how she felt. She said she had imagined keeping it in the family for years, and that I had taken that dream away from her.”
He paused.
“Then she told me that if I insisted on keeping it, she might not come to our wedding.”
I felt my anger rise again.
“So you decided to take the ring away from me without even telling me what was happening?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
The simple admission caught me off guard.
He didn’t try to defend himself.
He didn’t blame his sister.
He simply sat there, looking like a man who had made a terrible decision and was finally beginning to understand its consequences.
