I could no longer remain in the car.
I opened the door and hurried into the café.
Daniel was still sitting at the table, staring down at his empty hands.
He looked up when I approached.
The moment he recognized me, his eyes widened.
“Nadya?”
I stopped beside his chair.
“What was that?”
He stood quickly.
“What are you doing here?”
I laughed, but there was no happiness in the sound.
“That’s your question? You take my engagement ring, refuse to explain anything, drive across town, and give it to another woman. And you want to know what I’m doing here?”
Several people turned toward us.
Daniel glanced around the café.
“Please, sit down.”
“No. Answer me.”
“Nadya—”
“Who is she?”
He hesitated.
My chest tightened.
“Is she your ex-girlfriend?”
“No.”
“Have you been seeing her?”
“No!”
“Then why did you give her my ring?”
His face changed.
Not with anger.
