The forest no longer felt like a place filled with frightening secrets.
It felt like a place where our family had finally begun to tell the truth.
Over the following weeks, my mother and Mary began rebuilding their friendship.
They started with phone calls.
At first, the conversations lasted only a few minutes because both women were overwhelmed by the emotions of reconnecting.
Then the calls grew longer.
They began sharing photographs, recipes, and stories about the lives they had built apart from each other.
Soon, they were meeting every week.
Sometimes my mother visited Mary’s home. Other times, Mary came to ours with a bag of groceries and a list of things she wanted to cook with her old friend.
They rediscovered little habits they had forgotten.
Mary still laughed at the same ridiculous jokes.
My mother still talked with her hands whenever she became excited.
And whenever one of them started apologizing for the years they had lost, the other would gently change the subject.
