My 6-year-old daughter pressed her ear to my sister’s floor and whispered, “Daddy, Tobin is crying down there.” My son had been missing for 14 months, and everyone told me she was imagining things — until I heard three faint taps beneath the hardwood.

And I said yes.

And something went through me from the top of my head down, in about one second, in a plastic chair in a hospital room.

I want to be exact about that, because it is the only honest thing I have.

It was not a shock.

There was about one second where I thought it was going to be a shock — where my face did the thing a face does.

And then underneath that there was something else, and it arrived about half a second later, and it was recognition.

I had known something for about two years. And I had not known that I knew it.

That is a real thing that a person can do and I did it for two years and I am a forty-year-old man who runs a business.
PART 3

Nobody took my son out of that yard.

Nobody carried him. Nobody put him in a car at that farmhouse. There was never a stranger and there was never a van and there was never any of the four theories that this county spent a year on.
