“Who is William?”
Rick didn’t answer.
That was the first time I knew Anna had been telling me the truth.
There was something he didn’t want me to know.
And somehow, the answer was connected to a man from my past.
A man I thought had disappeared from my life forever.
Anna sat down.
She looked exhausted.
“Three weeks before the wedding, I was looking for Rick’s passport.”
She glanced at him.
“I opened the wrong drawer.”
Rick closed his eyes.
“And I found photographs.”
My stomach tightened.
“What photographs?”
“Pictures of you.”
I couldn’t speak.
“Pictures of you when you were nineteen.”
She reached into her backpack.
Then she pulled out a photograph.
My hands began trembling before I even touched it.
There I was.
Nineteen years old.
Standing beside William.
Both of us smiling.
Both of us young enough to believe we had our entire lives ahead of us.
I stared at the photograph.
“Where did you get this?”
“Rick had it.”
I looked at my husband.
“Why?”
He finally looked at me.
“I can explain.”
Anna stood.
“No.”
Her voice was shaking.
“You had twenty years to explain.”
She turned toward me.
“Mom, Rick knew William.”
“How?”
