“I know.”
He looked at her.
“I don’t expect anything from her.”
Anna sat quietly.
William continued.
“If she wants to know me, I’ll be here.”
He didn’t ask her to call him Dad.
He didn’t demand a relationship.
He didn’t try to replace Daniel.
For the first time in weeks, someone wasn’t trying to decide what Anna should feel.
The decision belonged to her.
And she took her time.
She met William again.
Then again.
Sometimes they talked for hours.
Sometimes they sat together without saying much.
She slowly learned about the man who had been missing from her life without either of them knowing why.
And I learned something too.
The truth doesn’t always repair the past.
Sometimes it simply gives you the freedom to stop living inside a lie.
I filed for divorce from Rick.
It wasn’t easy.
There were legal conversations.
There were difficult nights.
There were moments when I questioned whether I had missed something obvious.
But eventually, I understood.
The biggest betrayal wasn’t that Rick had known William.
It wasn’t even that he had hidden the letters.
It was that he had repeatedly decided what Anna and I were allowed to know about our own lives.
