“What?”
“Nora kept a notebook.”
“What kind of notebook?”
“Dates. Names. Places.”
“Why?”
“She was trying to remember everything.”
Elaine went inside and returned several minutes later carrying a small brown notebook.
She placed it on the table.
“Nora gave this to me before she moved here.”
I stared at it.
“Can I see it?”
“Some pages.”
She opened it carefully.
Most pages contained short entries.
Dates.
Bus stations.
Temporary addresses.
Names of people who had helped her.
Places where she had
