“Could I give Lily mine?”
For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.
I looked at the thick brown hair falling over his ears and curling around the back of his neck.
“You mean your hair?”
He nodded.
“She keeps saying she doesn’t care about losing it, but I know she misses it.”
He sat down beside me.
“She used to spend forever getting ready in the morning. Now she puts on that cap and tells everyone she’s fine. But sometimes, when she thinks nobody is looking, she touches her head.”
His voice grew quieter.
“I think she misses being able to look in the mirror and recognize herself.”
I put the folded towel in my lap.
“Ethan, that’s a very kind thought. But you need to understand that growing your hair long enough for a wig takes a long time. And donating it doesn’t mean the wig will be made entirely from your hair. The organization will have to tell us what is possible.”
