My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer #2

I imagined the laughter that would follow.

Then Ethan lifted his plate and announced, “Tomorrow, I’m making waffles.”

Lily immediately shook her head.

“Absolutely not. Your cooking license has been suspended.”

“I don’t have a cooking license!”

“Exactly.”

Jacob laughed so hard that he nearly spilled his coffee.

And I laughed with him.

Because our lives were not perfect.

They were not free from grief, fear, or uncertainty.

But they were still ours.

And sometimes, that was enough to begin again.

If you were Ethan’s mother, would you have been angry with him for helping Lily keep her secret, or would you have understood why he did it? And do you believe protecting someone sometimes means listening to what they want instead of deciding everything for them?
