My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer #2

He looked confused.

Mr. Harrison suggested that we speak with Lily and the drama teacher before drawing any conclusions.

A few minutes later, we walked toward the auditorium.

I followed Jacob down the corridor, watching him slow as we approached the doors.

The auditorium smelled of old curtains, paint, and dust. Costumes hung from racks along the wall. Fabric scraps covered a long worktable, and boxes of buttons and thread sat beneath it.

Near the back of the room stood an old sewing machine.

Jacob stopped in the doorway.

“That still works?”

Ms. Bennett, the drama teacher, nodded.

“We had it serviced last year. It’s not new, but it works beautifully.”

Lily sat beside the worktable wearing a knitted cap. The wig Ethan had given her rested on a stand nearby.

When she saw her father, her face fell.

“Dad.”

Jacob walked toward her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She looked at the table.
