My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer #2

Jacob stood.

“Is this about the wig?” I asked.

He stared at Ethan.

“You really haven’t told her?”

My stomach dropped.

“Tell me what?”

Jacob turned toward me.

“You have no idea what your son has been doing, do you?”

I looked at Ethan again.

He still wouldn’t meet my eyes.

For a moment, I felt something I had not felt since my husband’s death: the terrible realization that the person you love is carrying a problem you cannot see, and you have no idea how serious it might be.

“Please,” Jacob said to Ethan. “Tell her the truth yourself, or I’ll have to.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I helped Lily join stage crew, Mom.”

I blinked.

“The school play?”

He nodded.

“And I helped her find something that belonged to her mother.”

Jacob closed his eyes briefly.

Mr. Harrison stepped forward.

“There’s more to it.”

I sat down slowly.

“Somebody please explain what’s happening.”
