My 14-year-old son grew out his hair to make a wig for his classmate who lost hers because of cancer #2

“Will Lily be able to wear it?”

“They’ll do their best to make something suitable for her.”

He nodded.

“Then let’s do it.”

The next morning, he asked me to buy him a better hairbrush.

That was how it started.

At first, growing his hair seemed like a small adventure.

Ethan took pictures every few weeks to measure its progress. He complained about shampoo getting into his eyes and hair sticking to his forehead during gym class.

When it reached his collar, he began tying it back.

That was when the teasing started.

One boy in his class called him Princess Ethan.

Another asked whether he was growing his hair because he wanted to look like a girl.

During gym, someone pulled his ponytail hard enough to make him stumble.

Ethan came home angry that afternoon.

He threw his backpack onto the sofa and announced that he hated everyone at school.
