“A local shop owner heard about what Evan was doing a few weeks ago,” Marcus smiled warmly. “He told me that any kid with a heart like that shouldn’t have to walk home in the dark.” 
Evan’s eyes went wide as he touched the handlebars, unable to believe that his selflessness had come full circle. We walked home together that evening, side by side, as the cool night air brushed against our faces and the neighborhood lights began to flicker on. 
Looking at my son riding ahead on his new bicycle, I knew his father would have been remarkably proud of the young man he was becoming. The secrets were finally gone, replaced by a deep sense of peace that our small family had not felt in a very long time.
