We drove to the medical supplier together.
The wheelchair was waiting in a large box.
When the employee opened it, Alejandro stared.
It was modern, sturdy, lightweight, and much easier to maneuver than Elena’s old chair.
He touched one of the wheels.
“She’ll like it.”
“You think so?”
“I know so.”
On the drive to Elena’s house, Alejandro became nervous.
“What if she gets upset?”
“Why would she?”
“Because I sold my guitar.”
“She might be upset that you sacrificed something you loved.”
He looked out the window.
“But I don’t regret it.”
When we arrived, Elena was sitting near the front door in her old wheelchair.
Her mother, Jillian, was inside.
Elena saw Alejandro first.
Her face lit up.
“Alejandro?”
He smiled nervously.
“Hey.”
Then she saw the large box behind him.
“What is that?”
Alejandro looked at me.
I nodded.
He took a breath.
“It’s for you.”
“For me?”
“Yeah.”
Her mother came to the doorway.
“What is going on?”
Alejandro pointed at the box.
“It’s a wheelchair.”
Jillian’s expression changed immediately.
“A wheelchair?”
He nodded.
“I got it for Elena.”
Jillian stared at him.
Then at me.
Then at the box.
“I don’t understand.”
I stepped forward.
