“Disgusting,” she muttered.

I’d like to tell you I stormed in there. Part of me wanted to. My whole body leaned toward that room like a dog on a leash.

But a calmer voice in my head said: If you go in now, she’ll cry, say she’s sorry, and lie to your face. And Liz will pay for it later when you’re at work.

So I backed away.

“Disgusting,”

One step, then another. I eased the door shut behind me with a click so soft it barely counted as a sound.

In the car, my hands shook so badly I dropped my phone twice.

I called my sister, Carol. Carol is the blunt one in our family.

“What’s up?” she said.

“Go get Liz,” I said. “Right now. Pick her up from the house. She’ll be upset, but don’t ask her questions. And for the love of God, act like everything is normal.”

Carol is the blunt one in our family.

“Okay, you’re scaring me. What happened?”

“Trust me, Carol. I’ll explain everything later, once I’ve handled this. And please, just this once, promise me that no matter what happens when you fetch Liz, you won’t say a word.”

“Okay. I’m already grabbing my keys.”
