Legendary Hollywood Golden Age singer Peggy King dies at 96

One of her early career highlights came when she became a regular performer on CBS’s The Mel Tormé Show. She also gained recognition for a commercial jingle for Hunt’s Tomato Sauce, demonstrating how her voice could capture an audience’s attention even beyond traditional musical performances.

Her success attracted the attention of Columbia Records, which signed her to a long-term recording contract. King went on to release two best-selling albums for the label, along with several hit singles.

Her achievements were recognized in 1955 when she received an Emmy Award nomination for Best Female Singer. Three years later, she returned to the ceremony as a co-host, reflecting how far her career had progressed in just a few years.

Yet one of the performances that helped establish her place in television history came through The George Gobel Show. King appeared regularly on the popular comedy and variety program from 1954 to 1957. Host George Gobel affectionately called her “Pretty Perky Peggy King,” a nickname that reflected the cheerful personality audiences had come to associate with her.
