What They Were Really Planning
I couldn’t stop staring at the photograph.
My mother.
Victoria.
And the man I had trusted for years.
Standing beside a safe that looked almost identical to the one inside my office.
“What is that building?” I asked.
The investigator opened another folder.
“It’s a private storage facility registered under a company called Hayes Family Holdings.”
I frowned.
“I never created a company with that name.”
“We know.”
He slid another document across the desk.
“The company was created three years ago.”
I looked at the signature.
My name was there.
But I had never signed it.
Another forged document.
Another lie.
I felt sick.
“What were they planning to do with it?”
“We’re still investigating.”
He opened a second file.
“But we found something interesting.”
Inside was a copy of an insurance policy.
My mansion had been insured for an enormous amount.
The beneficiary had recently been changed.
I read the name.
Victoria.
My sister.
I stared at the page.
“When was this changed?”
“Four months ago.”
Four months.
Around the same time Elena had stopped answering my calls entirely.
Around the same time my mother had told me that Elena was “doing fine.”
I suddenly understood.
They hadn’t simply wanted my money.
They had wanted control of everything I owned.
The house.
The accounts.
The investments.
The insurance.
Possibly even my life.
I looked at the investigator.
“Keep going.”
He nodded.
“There is one more issue.”
He opened a final folder.
Inside were photographs of the mansion.
Taken from different angles.
Some from the road.
Some from neighboring properties.
And several were clearly taken from inside the house.
I felt a chill.
“Who took these?”
“We don’t know yet.”
I looked closer.
One photograph showed the hallway outside my office.
Another showed the safe.
A third showed Elena carrying Julian upstairs.
The date was printed beneath it.
Three years earlier.
My wife had been watched.
My son had been watched.
My entire family had been watched.
I stood up.
“I want security around the house immediately.”
“It’s already arranged.”
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
It was Elena.
“Julian?”
Her voice sounded frightened.
“What happened?”
“I heard someone outside.”
My entire body stiffened.
“Where are you?”
“In the house.”
“Stay inside.”
I grabbed my coat.
“Lock every door.”
“Okay.”
“I’m coming home.”
I rushed out.
When I arrived, two security guards were already checking the property.
Elena was standing inside the front entrance with Julian behind her.
I walked directly to them.
“Are you okay?”
She nodded.
Then she pointed toward the backyard.
“There.”
I looked.
Near the wall stood a small black object.
A camera.
My stomach dropped.
Someone had installed a surveillance camera facing the house.
The security team removed it.
But that wasn’t all.
They found another.
Then another.
Three cameras.
All pointed directly toward the areas where Elena and Julian spent most of their time.
I looked at my wife.
She was shaking.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
She shook her head.
“This isn’t your fault.”
But I couldn’t stop thinking about the years I had been away.
Someone had been watching them while I believed they were safe.
That evening, we changed every lock.
We installed new security systems.
We checked every room.
And just after midnight, one of the guards came to my office.
“Sir?”
“What is it?”
“We found something in the garage.”
He handed me a small envelope.
There was no name on it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Four words were written across it.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY.
I stared at the message.
Elena came into the room.
“What is that?”
I didn’t answer.
She read it herself.
Her face went pale.
Then Julian appeared behind her.
“Daddy?”
I immediately folded the paper.
“It’s nothing.”
But Elena knew I was lying.
She stepped closer.
“Julian…”
I looked at her.
For five years, I had believed distance was the hardest part of working overseas.
I had been wrong.
The hardest part was realizing that while I was thousands of miles away trying to protect my family…
Someone had been inside my home, destroying it from within.
I walked to the window.
Outside, the security lights illuminated the mansion.
Everything looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Then one of the guards shouted from the driveway.
“Sir!”
I turned.
He was holding something he had found beneath one of the parked cars.
A small black box.
He brought it inside.
The investigator examined it.
Then his expression changed.
“What is it?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“It’s a tracking device.”
My blood ran cold.
“Whose car?”
He checked the serial number.
Then looked up.
“Your car.”
I stared at him.
“How long has it been there?”
He hesitated.
“According to the battery and device logs…”
He looked at Elena.
“…for almost two years.”
Two years.
Someone had known where my family was going.
Where they were staying.
Where they were eating.
Where they were traveling.
And now I understood why my mother had always known exactly when Elena left the property.
This wasn’t random.
It was organized.
And whoever was behind it had just made one enormous mistake.
They had left evidence behind.
I looked at the investigator.
“Find out who planted it.”
He nodded.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His expression slowly changed.
“Mr. Hayes…”
“What?”
“We know who owns the device.”
He paused.
“And you’re not going to believe this.”
I stared at him.
“Tell me.”
He looked toward the door.
“The tracking device was registered to a security company.”
My heart sank.
“Which one?”
He gave me the name.
It was the exact company my mother had hired to “protect” the estate while I was working in Saudi Arabia.
And suddenly…
I realized the people I had paid to keep my family safe may have been the very people helping destroy them.
