I Was Looking at Jewelry in My Favorite Boutique When I Saw My Boyfriend Slip a Ring on a Woman Half My Age — Story of the Day

The gesture was so sudden that I couldn’t ignore it.

“Who are you talking to?” I asked.

“Nobody.”

“Then why did you hide your phone?”

“I didn’t hide anything.”

“You turned it off the second I looked at you.”

Mark slipped the phone into his pocket.

“Allison, I’m not going to have you checking my messages every time I use my phone.”

I stared at him.

In six years, we had never treated each other like strangers. We knew each other’s passwords, borrowed each other’s phones, and answered calls for one another when one of us was busy.

It had never been an issue before.

“Why is this suddenly different?” I asked quietly.

“Because I want some privacy.”

“Privacy from me?”

“Can we please stop doing this?”

My throat tightened.

There was something about his defensiveness that frightened me more than the phone itself.

“Mark, are you cheating on me?”
