Mark took my hands.
“I don’t want to spend another year making you wonder whether I see a future with you. I should have asked you this a long time ago.”
He lowered himself onto one knee.
Julia covered her mouth.
I stood frozen as Mark held out the ring.
“Allison, you’ve been my home for six years. You’ve stood beside me through every difficult season, and you’ve loved me even when I made it harder than it needed to be. I can’t promise that our life will always be easy. I can’t promise that we’ll never make mistakes. But I can promise that I want to face the future with you, honestly and completely.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Will you marry me?”
For a moment, I could only stare at him.
I thought about every night I had gone to sleep wondering when he would finally ask.
I thought about every conversation that had ended with me feeling as though I was demanding too much.
