The thought made my stomach twist.
Was this why he had never proposed?
Had he been waiting for someone younger, someone who could give him the children I could no longer have?
Had he spent six years pretending to build a future with me while secretly looking for someone else?
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
Then Mark turned slightly.
He saw me.
The color drained from his face so quickly that I knew he understood exactly how the scene looked.
“Allison?”
I walked toward him.
The girl turned to look at me, her smile fading as she noticed the expression on my face.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
Mark immediately removed his hand from the girl’s.
“Please, just—”
“Just what?” My voice shook. “Just pretend I didn’t see you putting a ring on another woman’s finger?”
A few people nearby stopped browsing.
Mark glanced at the salesperson, then back at me.
