All that time, she had known that her daughter was preparing to marry the same man she was secretly sleeping with.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you ever love me?”
He opened his mouth, but my mother spoke before he could answer.
“Claire, before you make a decision, there is something you need to know.”
I turned toward her, trembling with anger.
“Don’t you dare ask me to listen to another excuse.”
“It’s not an excuse.”
“Then what is it?”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Has Daniel ever told you where he worked twenty years ago?”
The question was so unexpected that, for a moment, I forgot about the betrayal.
“What does that have to do with anything?”
Daniel’s face changed.
It was subtle, but I saw it. The color drained from his cheeks, and his hands tightened around the edge of the bed.
My mother noticed, too.
“Apparently,” she murmured, “he hasn’t told you.”
