“This is not funny, Callum,” I said, standing up so quickly that my coffee sloshed over the rim of the cup onto the table. “No, that is not how this works, and that is not how we operate.”
“Sharon,” he called out as I turned away.
“Don’t,” I said coldly, walking straight into the bathroom and shutting the door firmly behind me.
PART 4
I locked the bathroom door with a sharp turn of the mechanism, which felt like a declaration of war. I sat down on the edge of the large porcelain bathtub, still wrapped in the white hotel robe, and remembered something my grandmother used to say.
She was the one who always told me to watch what a man does rather than what he promises with his words. My hands were shaking uncontrollably as I pulled out my phone to text my friend.
“I think I made a massive mistake and married the wrong man,” I typed quickly to Felicia. “I think our entire relationship was built on a lie.”
The three little typing dots appeared almost instantly on the screen as she began to reply. On the other side of the bathroom door, I heard Callum’s footsteps approaching slowly and carefully.
