Miriam was silent for a moment.
“Then I’ll execute the transfer sequence.”
My mother had never left the entire hotel to Dad. The land beneath it, fifty-one percent of the hotel holding company, and a seventeen-million-dollar reserve fund had been placed inside a revocable family structure jointly controlled by Dad and me until my thirty-fifth birthday.
I had turned thirty-five three days earlier.
That birthday triggered the succession provision my father had apparently forgotten. His authority over those assets had expired, while mine became controlling.
At 8:43, a notification appeared on my phone.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
The Bennett Legacy Trust now controlled the land, the majority hotel interest, and the seventeen-million-dollar reserve. I turned my phone facedown and waited.
The first call arrived less than a minute later. Then another. And another.
By the time I reached my apartment, I had twenty-three missed calls.
For the first time that evening, I smiled.
Part 2: Sixty-Eight Missed Calls
By 9:15 that evening, the number of missed calls had climbed from twenty-three to forty-one. I ignored every one of them, made myself a cup of tea, and listened to the first voicemail Vanessa had left.
“Claire, call your father immediately. Whatever stunt you pulled, undo it.”
