I walked into my company party and found my husband’s arm wrapped around a coworker’s waist, and then, in front of everyone, he told me I had never been anything more than his housekeeper.

It was my husband’s own line, handed back to him, quietly, in a room that had stopped breathing.

Carl opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

It was the first time in twenty-three years I had seen him without an answer.

Sheila had taken a half step away from him.

“Carl,” she whispered. “What is he talking about? Vice president?”

“Not now, Sheila.”

“You told me you’d been a director for years. You told me you’d built Regional Operations from nothing.”

“Sheila. Not now.”

“Let’s talk about what you built,” said David.

He stepped away from the microphone stand, and the room, without anyone telling it to, rearranged itself around him.

He took a manila folder from Priya, who was holding it against her chest like a shield.

“Carl joined this company as a dispatcher in September of 2016. Supervisor in 2018. Manager in 2020. Director in 2022. Three promotions in six years. Do you know what it says on the sponsor line of every one of those forms?”
