I held them against my chest and whispered, “Your daddy is going to be so happy to meet you.”
That evening, I called Daniel.
“Baby, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, my love.”
“Are you sitting down?”
He chuckled.
“Amara, what have you done now?”
“Daniel, I’m pregnant.”
Silence.
At first, I thought the call had disconnected.
“Daniel?”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I went to the clinic today.”
Another silence followed.
Then his voice changed.
“Amara, why would you do this to me?”
I stood motionless.
“What do you mean, do this to you?”
“You know what I mean! I’m not ready for a child.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“But you said you wanted a family with me.”
“That doesn’t mean I wanted this to happen now!”
I tried to steady my breathing.
“Daniel, we have been together for seven years. You told me you were going to come and pay my bride price. You said your business was improving. I thought we were finally ready.”
