For once, I was grateful that he had not tried to force his way into a decision.
Then he asked a question I had never expected.
“Amara, did you ever stop loving me?”
I stared at him.
There was a time when I would have answered that question without hesitation. I would have told him that I had loved him through every disappointment, every broken promise, and every lonely night.
But I was no longer certain that the love I remembered was the same as the love I had once felt.
“I loved the man I believed you were,” I said. “I loved the future you promised me. I loved the person I thought you would become.”
I paused.
“But I had to learn to live without that person.”
He wiped his face.
“I wish I could change everything.”
“So do I. But wishing is not the same as changing.”
