“She was your child when I brought her home and had to figure out everything myself.”
His voice became strained.
“Please, let me explain.”
“I’m listening.”
He took a deep breath.
“My marriage to Vanessa ended.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“Things were not what I expected. We had problems from the beginning. Her family became involved in everything. They wanted to control my business, my decisions, my life.”
“And you are telling me this because?”
“Because I made the wrong choice.”
I leaned against the wall.
“Daniel, if your marriage had been perfect, would you be calling me right now?”
He did not answer.
“If Vanessa’s family had given you everything you wanted, would you have remembered that you have a daughter?”
“Amara, please.”
“No. I want you to answer.”
He remained silent.
And in that silence, I understood something important.
I might never receive the apology I wanted. I might never hear him admit every selfish reason behind his decisions.
