I was pregnant, frightened, and alone.
And Daniel was preparing to get married.
My mother discovered the truth a few days later when she found me crying in the kitchen.
At first, I tried to hide it.
“It’s nothing, Mama.”
She took one look at my face.
“Amara, don’t insult me by telling me nothing is wrong.”
I broke down.
I told her everything: the pregnancy, Daniel’s disappearance, Vanessa, the wedding, and the way he had spoken to me.
My mother listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she pulled me into her arms.
I cried against her shoulder like a child.
“Why wasn’t I enough?” I asked. “What did I do wrong?”
She held my face between her hands.
“Listen to me carefully. A man who chooses another woman does not automatically prove that the woman he leaves behind is lacking. Sometimes, his choice reveals more about his character than about the person he abandoned.”
